EastEnders serve up sitcom revival

June Brown and other TV stars are taking to the shop floor to create a real-life version of sitcom Are You Being Served? in memory of late television favourite Wendy Richard.

Wendy, who died last February from cancer at the age of 65, was a huge hit as Miss Brahms in the BBC One classic which first aired in the 1970s.

Now Nicholas Smith, who played Mr Rumbold in the show, together with June and fellow Albert Square star Natalie Cassidy, will help out at a charity sale at London store Selfridges.

A plaque in memory of actress Wendy Richard has been unveiled at a London pub which her parents used to run. The actress, best known for her roles in the soap opera EastEnders and department store sitcom Are You Being Served?, died in February after a long battle with cancer.

Actress Wendy Richard’s clothes are being auctioned for charity – in a sale that befits the fictional Grace Brothers department store character she played on television in the Seventies. Miss Richard, who lost her battle against breast cancer in February, aged 65, is best remembered for her role as Pauline Fowler in EastEnders.

The late former EastEnders star Wendy Richard MBE is to be commemorated by a blue plaque. The Heritage Foundation plans to erect a blue plaque as a commemoration at Wendy Richard’s former home, a converted pub in Mayfair. The plaque will be a permanent tribute to the former EastEnders actress, after losing her fight with cancer aged 65. The star played matriarchal Pauline Fowler for 21 years. Downtrodden Pauline was, until 2006, one of only two characters to remain in the series from the very first episode in 1985. Wendy was awarded an MBE in 2000 for services to television.

Natalie Cassidy heartbroken over Wendy’s death

Natalie Cassidy has paid tribute to her late EastEnders co-star Wendy Richard, describing the actress as her "second mum". Cassidy, who played Sonia Fowler on the BBC One soap, revealed that she grew close to the Albert Square legend after losing her mother Evelyn to bowel cancer seven years ago. "I’m heartbroken. It’s so sad to lose someone who’s so important to me again because of that horrible, horrible word - cancer," Cassidy told the News Of The World. "I lost my mum to bowel cancer when I was only 19 and after that Wendy and I became so close," she continued.

Former EastEnders star shocked

Former EastEnders star James Alexandrou said that that he collapsed after hearing the news that his screen mother Wendy Richard had died. Alexandrou, who played Martin Fowler in the soap from the age of 11, said, "I think I was in denial about the whole thing." He added that he refused to believe the woman he referred to as "Mummy number two" was dying of cancer. "I thought she was as tough as old boots and indestructible," he admitted.
