Peggy Mitchell

We're on your manor

Weymouth will be awash with stars when one of the nation's favourite soap operas comes to town next week.

After news this week that a new film will be made in Portland Harbour, the BBC has announced that EastEnders will arrive here on Monday.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council communications manager Jacqui Gisborne is delighted that the television audience, which reaches 10 million, will get to see the town.

(Don't) Call me a Cab

Of course, such departures vary according to circumstance. If said character has 'sensationally quit', then we hear the usual declarations of theatre aspirations ('real' acting), tv presenting (loads of cash) or, most hilariously, Making it Big in Hollywood (just delusional).

If the axe has fallen, we get the initial devastation, quickly followed by an announcement that it was by mutual agreement, that the character had gone as far as he/she could go, blah, blah, blah.

Fancy a Mini Mo?

And so the annual works outing is to be cancelled due to budgetary cutbacks. No Phil gently purpling in the Spanish sun or Peggy in one of her fetching hats. They're not even going to Norfolk. I think it's generally agreed that this is a bit of a shame, and in the absence of an old fashioned whip-round, I've thought of a few money making schemes that could top up the holiday fund.

'EastEnders' scrap plans for Spain episodes

EastEnders producers have been forced to scrap plans to film a week's worth of episodes in Spain.

Chiefs had hoped to send the Mitchell family abroad for a special summer storyline, but they were told that it would not be possible due to cutbacks at the BBC.

"There's been a lot of cost-cutting recently and they couldn't justify taking the Mitchells abroad," an insider told the Daily Star Sunday. "They then hoped to keep the same dates and take them to Norfolk but it was even dearer. They're now looking at the south coast.

Another Mitchell for Peggy's clan

More bovver for EastEnders – another Mitchell is bound for Walford.

Archie, played by Larry Lamb, 60, is Ronnie and Roxy’s dad and the younger brother of Peggy’s dead hubby Eric.

The soap’s chief Diederick Santer said: “Archie is a Mitchell through and through.”

True to form, Peggy will fall for the rough diamond when he arrives this summer.

Lonely Hearts Too

Ah, look at all the lonely ladies; where does one start? Most of the females of Walford have, at some point, been left high and dry, with only a fag and a vodka for company.

Peggy Mitchell has been a Valerie (Singleton) for too long, the last time she had a twinkle in her eyes was when Jack Edwards was around. It seems obvious that he's not scheduled to return, so who else could be a contender?

Rear 'Ender moment for Charlie

EastEnders' Charlie Slater finds himself with a sticky situation on his hands when one of his humbugs becomes attached to Yolande Trueman's rear end.

Yolande (Angela Winters) attempts to help Charlie (Derek Martin) in his weight loss programme by dragging him along to play badminton with her. Charlie, however, is cheating the diet and does his best to hide his packet of sweets which lay on the back seat of his taxi.

Old Masters

I wouldn't mind growing old disgracefully in Albert Square. Just look at Patrick Trueman, his wife goes away and what does he do? Wild parties and cockroach racing; forget 'Skins' and being a teenager, being a senior citizen has never looked more enjoyable. EastEnders portrayal of ageing is spot on - no obvious pensioner pursuits like bowls or ballroom dancing, just men and women shaking off a lifetime of responsibility and trying to have some fun. Except, of course, for Dot. Although without her contrast we wouldn't get the fine comedy sparring between her and Jim.

Sylvia Sims lands EastEnders role

Veteran actress Sylvia Syms, who recently played the Queen Mother in the acclaimed film 'The Queen', has landed a part in 'EastEnders'.

According to The Sun, the 73-year-old actress will play a mystery character who helps Queen Vic landlady Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) out.

An insider told the paper: "Sylvia plays a woman called Olive who is not related to any of the other characters.

"But she and Peggy have a connection which is part of a much bigger storyline," the source said.

Peggy fights for her life at the Vic

Peggy Mitchell will be left fighting for her life after a mystery arsonist torches the Queen Vic.

Fans will see Peggy, played by 69-year-old Barbara Windsor, trapped upstairs after the unknown attacker - actually her evil grandson Ben - sets fire to the Albert Square pub.

Ben, who is set to become the soap's answer to Devil's child Damien from the horror film The Omen, flees from the scene, leaving his grandmother and cousin Courtney struggling to breathe as the room fills with smoke.
