Peggy Mitchell

Victoria in Flames

A poem about the dramatic fire at the Queen Vic.

The crone stood in the burning pub
Screaming like a banshee.
The wedding party celebrate
Janine took what she fancied.

The drinks were flowing, music played,
The young ones dancing faster.
And in the hall the ticking bomb
Got closer to disaster.

The flames were getting higher
As the atmosphere got thick.
Phil had lit his scotch
And left the hallway double quick.

May hopes Peggy’s Theme will touch hearts

Composer Simon May chats to Walford Web about Peggy Mitchell’s swansong.

Simon May hopes that "Peggy’s Theme" ’will touch the hearts of all EastEnders viewers’ in the character’s final episode later this week.

Last month, the BBC confirmed that Peggy would bow out to a special theme, as actress Barbara Windsor bids farewell to the soap after 16 years. Speaking exclusively to Walford Web, May revealed that Executive Producer Bryan Kirkwood had entrusted him with the brief that the episode should be ’something to remember in years to come’.

Cheers and tears on set as Vic explodes

Walford’s iconic Queen Victoria pub is set to go out with a bang next week, and director Lee Salisbury revealed that there were both cheers and tears from the EastEnders cast as the explosion was filmed.

‘When we filmed the big explosion, we got the whole cast to watch,’ Salisbury told Inside Soap magazine. ‘Everyone was cheering and a few people had tears in their eyes.

‘The Vic is so iconic so they felt quite sad to see it go.’

Pat and Peggy - the final curtain for Walford’s double act

Matt Conder looks back at some classic moments and wonders if the end really is nigh for the legendary duo.

There may not be much time left to enjoy one of Walford’s most explosive, yet seemingly indestructible relationships.

Over the years we have seen the pair comfort each other, support each other, and also slap each other! We really have seen them through the good times, and the bad times. And so with the news that Barbara Windsor has filmed her final scenes as Peggy Mitchell, we may well be watching the last act of the Pat and Peggy show.

It’s A Wrap! Windsor films final ’Enders scene

Barbara Windsor films final soap scenes, bringing to a close her long association with EastEnders.

EastEnders legend Barbara Windsor has filmed her final scenes with the soap, it has emerged.

The 72 year old, who made a name for herself by appearing in a string of movies in the Carry On franchise back in the sixties and seventies, was said to be tearful after filming her final scene as Peggy Mitchell.

Blood, Sweat and Tears: An Average Walford Summer

These are busy times in Albert Square; in the dead of night the Scooby Doo gang finally unearthed poor Owen’s remains and the air was thick with putrefaction, screaming and Fatboy. It seems a strange irony that Owen will be remembered in death much as he was in life, as a bad smell.

Beyond the borders of Walford

Matt Conder looks back at episodes filmed away from the Square and gets EastEnders Production Manager Rona McKendrick’s account of the recent filming in central London.

There comes a time when the residents of Albert Square find that they can’t do everything in Walford. I mean you can’t do all of your shopping there, and if you wanted to go on holiday it wouldn’t be any good setting out your beach towels in Turpin Road would it? It always makes EastEnders feel much more realistic to have its characters visiting locations outside of Walford.

’Enders Queen Vic Fire Planned

The iconic soap pub is to burn down in a future plot.

EastEnders ’ iconic landmark, The Queen Victoria pub, is to burn to the ground in a devastating fire later this year.

The pub, which has been the focal point of the Square since the soap began 25 years ago, will burn down in the autumn and the blaze may be linked to the exit of Walford matriarch Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor). Executive producer Bryan Kirkwood has revealed that her exit will be "both epic and poignant" , a statement echoed in Dominic Treadwell-Collins’s Spotlight interview with Walford Web.

Bryan Kirkwood talks to Walford Web
