Barbara Windsor receives lifetime contribution award

Much-loved star Barbara Windsor – who bowed out of EastEnders this year after 16 years as Peggy Mitchell – was yesterday honoured for her outstanding contribution to showbusiness.

The 73-year-old star was rewarded for her achievements at the The Co-operative Variety Club Showbiz Awards.

Other big winners included TV talent show The X Factor which triumphed over hit rival Strictly Come Dancing to collect the best entertainment prize.

The 73-year-old, whose last scenes as Peggy Mitchell were shown on Friday, was often in tears at the ruling.

She said: "After I’d handed in my notice I went through enormous stress as I wasn’t allowed to tell my friends.

"I just wanted it out there. It was a huge weight to carry and I’d come home crying as I just felt so dishonest.
