25@25: ’The Alternatives’

A list of ’different’ categories for EastEnders 25th anniversary.

I did think of putting together 5 lists of favourite EastEnders males, females, villains and so on; but too often one persons icon is another ones pain in the proverbial. So instead, I offer you an irreverent collection of ’different’ categories, no less noteworthy and to quote Rob Brydon’s Keith Barret; it’s just a bit of fun!

5 TOTAL CHANGES OF CHARACTER

1. Billy Mitchell: Violent bully to loveable loser

2. Jim Branning: Grumpy old bigot to Gentleman Jim

Watching a Ghost Town

I have watched EastEnders faithfully in the US since it first aired here. Now, I am one of the lucky few whose local Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) is still broadcasting EastEnders. Unfortunately, we are about six years behind and only showing two episodes a week. Pulling out my calculator, I have deduced that this means that we will never, ever catch up to the current British episodes.

EastEnders fans miss Wendy Richard, but not Pauline Fowler

It’s hard to disentangle Wendy Richard from the part that brought her lasting fame: Pauline Fowler in EastEnders. Miss Brahms in Are You Being Served? seems like an aeon ago, her busty, Cockney sparra flirtiness long superseded by Pauline’s hatchet face and curdling insults to any who crossed her, or even dared a “Good morning Pauline, how are you today?” Pauline met even the most everyday entreaty with a scowl.

Wendy Richard expresses 'EastEnders' regret

Wendy Richard has admitted that she regrets starring on EastEnders for so long. The actress insisted that she does not miss playing Pauline Fowler on the BBC One soap and now thinks that she should have made her departure sooner. "I wish that I'd left EastEnders earlier because you think there are no pockets in shrouds. There's no point in knocking yourself out for the money," Wendy told the Daily Record. "I'm just more relaxed now. "I just wasn't happy at my job anymore, and if you're not happy doing your job, then you should go and that's what I did.

Dawn Fowler?!

There was a - no doubt - apocryphal story in one of the tabloids last week that EastEnders bosses are intending to turn Dawn Swann into the next Pauline Fowler. Now, whether or not she is being handed the Sacred Cardie, it sounds like a bold and possibly interesting development. How long could Dawn carry on being another pretty face, lucky/unlucky with men?

Dawn Swann the new Pauline Fowler?

EastEnders bosses plan to turn sexy Dawn Swann into the next Pauline Fowler.

The character, played by Kara Tointon, has been such a hit, bosses are keen to cash in by turning her character into a matriarch.

An insider said: “Pauline was quite a catch back in the day. But after years of being downtrodden by her family you wouldn’t have guessed it.

“Kara is one of the soap’s most popular actresses and they want her to stay in the Square for years. So they’re making her the head of her own family.
