Jack Ryder joins The Archers

Former EastEnders star Jack Ryder is to join the BBC Radio 4 soap The Archers in a move likely to prove controversial with sections of the long-running show's notoriously obsessive fans. Ryder will join the soap at the end of the month and is expected to remain until at least the end of this year. His character will be called Ryan and will arrive in Ambridge through a connection to resident veterinarian Alistair Lloyd. Natalie Cassidy decides to avoid TV

Former EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy has vowed to stay away from the small screen for a year in a bid to avoid being typecast.

The actress, who joined the soap 13 years ago, said she made the decision because most viewers know her as Sonia Fowler.

Her latest project is joining the touring version of hit play The Vagina Monologues.

However, there's one thing the brunette is not so keen to take part in - reality TV.

"You'd have to drag me into the jungle screaming," she told the Sun.

So Jack Ryder (Jamie Mitchell) is leaving EastEnders for greener pastures. Why am I not surprised? There is a tradition of young hotties making a name for themselves in Walford then moving on. Most recently of course was Joe Absolom (Matthew Rose), but Sean Maguire (Aidan Brosnan) and Nick Berry (Simon Wicks) spring to mind as well. And, who can forget the sight of Sid Owen warbling on "Top of the Pops"? Truly a new pop music low! At least Jack is not threatening to follow in Sid's footsteps….
