Steve McFadden reflects on 20 years of memorable storylines on the soap.
It’s been a difficult year for Phil Mitchell. Not only has he had to contend with Crown Court and social services to hang on to his two children, but he’s had to battle demons of his own to stay firmly on the wagon.
Last month, it was reported that actor Steve McFadden would be taking on a cocaine addiction storyline for his character. In an interview with TV Times, McFadden calls this his ’most challenging and exciting year in EastEnders.’
’To be able to say that after 20 years is quite something, don’t you think?’ he quipped.
’I feel great about what I’ve achieved in the past 20 years,’ he went on to tell the magazine. ’I’m most proud of storylines that have captured the public’s imagination such as "Sharongate" and "Who Shot Phil". When you’re doing a story like that it feels a bit like being in a world title fight."
The actor also described his pride for his on-going alcoholism storyline, saying the positive feedback and letters from real-life sufferers ’means I got it right.’
McFadden’s on-screen mum, Barbara Windsor filmed her last scenes as Peggy Mitchell this week. The upcoming storylines for Phil involving the return of ex-girlfriend Lisa Fowler to claim daughter Louise, and his subsequent cocaine addiction are thought to be linked to Peggy’s exit storyline.
