The Walford favourite is to become hooked on crack cocaine in a future storyline.
According to a report in The Mirror, the character of Phil Mitchell is to develop an addiction to crack cocaine.
Phil, played by Steve McFadden, will become hooked on the drug after events in his personal life spiral out of control leading to a battle with depression.
A Walford insider told The Mirror "Bosses thought long and hard about the storyline. It will be shocking, powerful and dramatic. At no point will viewers see Phil take drugs to ensure the episodes are suitable for the audience."
A BBC spokeswoman said of the plot "EastEnders has a history of tackling social issues. We are working closely with drug and alcohol charities, including Addaction and DrugScope to make sure that we sensitively reflect this difficult issue."
Martin Barnes, chief executive of DrugScope, predicted a positive impact from the storyline and added "If EastEnders sensitively reflect the impact that drug use has on Phil, it could help."
It was recently announced that Phil’s son Ben is to be temporarily written out of the soap but will return with a new head later in the year. Phil will also face losing his daughter Louise when her mother Lisa returns to Walford to find her daughter.
