Letitia Dean returns to EastEnders

A welcome surprise sees Sharon Rickman reappear in Walford later this year.

EastEnders' bosses are bringing back the show’s original “Princess” – with the return of Sharon Watts.

Feisty Sharon, played by Letitia Dean, last appeared in 2006 after being one of the original 1985 cast – as the adopted daughter of Dirty Den and Angie.

Her storylines involving a stormy love life with the Mitchells were ratings dynamite. Now she has been coaxed back to Albert Square in what BBC bosses see as a major coup.Letitia, 44, said of her return: “I am really looking forward to being part of the EastEnders team again. The show has always been very close to my heart. “I can’t wait to work with my old colleagues and see what’s in store for Sharon.”

Insiders say they hope her return will be longer than the 12 months she has recently signed up for. Letitia will be back on screen in late summer after rejoining the cast in May or June – once the scripts for her comeback have been finalised.

Executive producer Bryan Kirkwood said: “We’re thrilled Letitia is coming home to Albert Square where she belongs. “Sharon is a real favourite with EastEnders’ fans and we can’t wait to see her back.”

Sharon was married to Grant Mitchell, but fled the Square in 1994 soon after her shocking affair with his brother Phil was revealed. It remains one of the soap’s highest-rated episodes with more than 18 million viewers. Having grown up in The Queen Vic, she took over as landlady in 2001, but left again five years later following the death of latest husband Dennis Rickman.

Her return will mean a reunion with former lover Phil, played by Steve McFadden. And it could also see renewed attempts by the Beeb to lure back Ross Kemp as Phil’s wayward brother Grant.
