Tointon was crowned champion in the 2010 series of Strictly Come Dancing and seems an obvious choice to follow in the footsteps of Dixon, who joined the judging panel after her own victory in series 5.
With the Mis-teeq singer leaving the BBC to join Britain's Got Talent, several past contestants have already been rumoured to be lined up as a replacement, but judge Bruno Tonioli believes the EastEnders actress is a frontrunner.
He said: 'I think Kara would be very good as a replacement as she is a champion and feisty.
'Jill Halfpenny would also be very good for the same reasons. I don't think a decision will be made until June or July when we have regrouped.'
Tonioli added that he was shocked by Dixon's decision to move to Britain's Got Talent, a reality show that pulls in less viewers than the ballroom contest.
The Italian choreographer said: 'I'm surprised Alesha quit, but that's the industry and I think she will be great on Britain's Got Talent. We'll carry on and we will come back bigger and better than ever.'
