EastEnders is sitting pretty
EastEnders has come out on top by beating bitter rivals Coronation Street in the first soap gongs of 2007.
The Daily Star Sunday can exclusively reveal that the hit BBC1 show has won four prestigious Bubble Awards – voted for by readers of All About Soap magazine.
They scooped gongs for Best Tearjerker, Best Dressed, Biggest Wedding Shock and Best Double Act.
Corrie came a close second winning three awards while Emmerdale only managed one – despite another action-packed year in the Dales.
EastEnders actress Lacey Turner picked up the Best Tearjerker Award for her character Stacey Slater’s abortion storyline.
And the soap’s hottest babe Kara Tointon, pictured, who plays Dawn Swann, was voted Best Dressed star.
The Biggest Wedding Shocks Award also went to Albert Square – picked up by Laurie Brett for her character Jane Collins jilting Ian Beale at the altar.
Walford grease monkeys Ricky Groves and Cliff Parisi won Best Double Act for playing pals Garry Hobbs and Minty Peterson.
Corrie winners included dishy Jenny Platt, who will leave the smash hit ITV1 soap next year when her current contract expires.
The babe walked away with the I’m A Survivor award.
Fans voted in their droves for her character Violet Wilson who suffered a miscarriage following the breakdown of her relationship with Jamie Baldwin, played by Rupert Hill.
Hill also scooped the award for Best Fight Scene. The dramatic showdown with on-screen dad Danny (Bradley Walsh) was the one that fans thought was the Best Soap Scrap of the year.
And hunky actor Rob James-Collier got his very first award since joining the soap.
He picked up Fittest Fella for his role as factory boss Liam Connor.
Emmerdale triumphed in the Christmas Cracker category. Viewers voted Tom King’s grisly Christmas Day murder as the best festive storyline.
An insider said: “The annual Bubble Awards provide a good insight into how the soaps are shaping up.
“And as they’re the first of the year, they always give a good indication of things to come.
“EastEnders always do well in all the awards and once again they’ve come out on top. But there are still a few months to go before the British Soap Awards in May and a lot can happen from now until then.”
