Is it too soon to be bringing back E20? And what we will do with the characters afterwards.
The BBC have announced that E20 is to return for a second series in September this year - for the first time it will also air on BBC Three as well as online.
This to me brings up two questions immediately.
Firstly, if it’s going to be shown on BBC Three, let’s pray that there’s some consistency around the running times of the episodes, as frankly some of them were ridiculous last time (one of the episodes being about 2 minutes long from memory, and one of them over 10).
Secondly, what are you going to do with yet another gaggle of young characters after the episodes have finished airing? EastEnders is already dangerously close to teenager overload, the first set of E20 characters have integrated badly into the current cast, and are almost moping around like spare parts - with the notable exception of Zsa Zsa who seems to have fitted in with Shirley and her gang of misfits quite nicely. Leon and Fatboy are useless add-ons, and unless Mercy is strongly written she’ll be wasted too when she reappears.
Teenage characters are all well and good, but get too many of them and the inevitable cry of "EastEnders is turning into Hollyoaks and we knew that would happen when Bryan Kirkwood took over" (which is a phrase I absolutely loathe by the way) will start to be shouted loud and clear from the rooftops.
That’s something I hope doesn’t happen.
