Missed Opportunities

Are several good storylines or potential storylines being wasted? Betty thinks so.

Last time I wrote I wrote about how many characters hadn’t been explored and their character opportunities had been lost when they could have been huge for the show. Today I plan to write about the huge possible storylines that have been wasted or are being wasted as we speak.

The arrival of Christian, this would have been the perfect time to bring back Jane’s mum and explore her characters history. Imagine the scenes between the three of them? They could have been explosive. I think most people would agree that Linda would have issues with Christian’s lifestyle. What I would like to know is would she still have issues with Ian know that he knows and has accepted Lesley? As for their sibling feud it was over in around a day. They should have continued it through for a little longer it would have been more interesting than this current Claire and Ian storyline which is pathetic, boring and hypocritical on both Ian and Jane’s part.

Chelsea being released from prison could have been a huge storyline but we have very little reference to it just like Dean, he finally got interesting and left the same episode. She has barely been on screen since she returned and Denise departed, except the petty feud with Claire. What if Chelsea had been bullied instead of Dean? The only thing that has come from Chelsea being in prison is she has more patience recently and she was lacking confidence about getting a job.

Why no decent follow through from the Stella and May storyline? Why has Dawn been so able to trust Jase? Especially after they split and he slept with Roxy. What about Ben why didn’t he need a psychologist? Why didn’t Phil, Peggy or even Roxy want to know about what made Stella who she was? No resolution to the Watch Me Daddy story which was very, very interesting yet never developed.

Sean went to Iraq, Sean obviously still has many issues that have to be addressed but Iraq could be one of the most controversial subjects the show has ever seen yet they continue to let it slip through their nest. I’m not asking for a 5 year long storyline but it would be nice for one episode if he sits down with Big Mo or Tanya and explains his life in Iraq. (I only said Big Mo because he needs to bond with more people than Stacey, Jean and Tanya. In case of a future return).

Another one is Steven’s illness. Why is he so happy and kind all of sudden? A few months ago he was a psycho stalking his family, locking his step father up in a room, grooming his little sister on the internet and even shooting his step fathers wife, yet know he can’t even decide if a homeless person is trouble or not. It’s too unreal. Okay he was ill but he was a smart boy that could manipulate people and get what he wanted but things exploded and Jane was shot. Why doesn’t he dress like he did anymore? He looks so different from his appearance; he has only been around a few months and changed too much. I can understand them having Jane accept him but him moving back in was a bad move; he could have stayed at Pat’s.

Other stories that are being wasted but could still be explored are Heather’s comfort eating, this has to be explored for her character to stay around in the show, she is becoming boring and repetitive very fast. Libby at college, she took a big step last year by moving onto college yet we haven’t heard he mention it except from when Tamwar arrived and she knew him from college. Claire’s history why has she become so obsessed with money? Jase has mentioned his brothers a few times know and I have a feeling we may see them some time before the ending of the year or at least some mention about their relationship and also him and Roxy are so much better than Dawn, Jase and Ronnie, Jack. Another is Jack’s history, when his arrival was announced wasn’t it said that he was a racist, thug and a bully? Also why wasn’t their more made of the stabbing storyline? Little Jamie is a great young actor.

I think I’ve only really started to think about this because of the crap we are seeing at the moment. Claire and Ian is too silly and unbelievable and too out of character for Jane and Ian. Steven and Stacey is crap, she isn’t daft enough to fall for him and his character has changed. Bradley’s crap, he’s not the same Bradley who arrived in the Square, he has changed too much for it too believable. What about his skin care and alleges which are never mentioned anymore? Personally I don’t think Charlie Clements is that great? He needs good actors/tresses to carry him to pull of a good performance unlike Lacey, June and Jake around him who can carry around 3 or 4 actors in a scene including themselves. And the Minty/Heather stuff is pathetic. Who cares? I like Minty and Garry and think they have potential. I do like Heather at times as well. Why do they all get used to awfully? The Shirley/Phil scenes and Tanya/Max/Sean stuff these last few weeks have been great to watch. But the future does look bright as the stories are slowly starting to pick up know in the build up to Easter …which bring some dramatic moments for the Square.
