Angry Christians have blasted EastEnders over a storyline that has turned preacher Lucas Johnson into a Bible-obsessed killer.
Hundreds of viewers have complained that the plot is offensive to their faith.
The story has seen devout christian Lucas fail to help dying ex-wife Trina and strangle love rival Owen to death.
Last week he attacked his new wife Denise. The furore is set to rise in the coming week as the Pentecostal pastor, played by Don Gilet, becomes increasingly unhinged.
Yesterday, the BBC soap’s spokesman called the plot "challenging" but said: "There’s no suggestion Lucas’ behaviour is connected to those of the Christian faith."
Soap chiefs had planned for him to kill a call girl, but rewrote scripts last month after the real-life Bradford prostitute murders.
But they have defended the rest of the storyline. The BBC said on its website: "Lucas is a very damaged and dangerous individual who has created a twisted version of the Christian ’faith’ in his mind."
